At the beginning of season 2 of Fox’s New Girl, costume designer Deb McGuire told EW that Jess (Zooey Deschanel) would be dressing sexier, thanks in part to her blossoming relationship with Nick (Jake Johnson).

While we did see a few hemlines rise — and a couple of necklines plunge — McGuire stuck to the mix of vintage finds, pieces from preppy brands like J. Crew and Kate Spade, and over-the-top costumes that are the hallmark of Jess’s adorkable signature style.

Follow along as we count down Jess’ top five style moments from season 2. READ FULL STORY »

'New Girl' costume designer explains why Jess's style has gotten a lot sexier lately

Last year, New Girl costume designer Deb McGuire told EW that Jess’ (Zooey Deschanel) look was going to get a whole lot sexier in season two. She wasn’t kidding.

From wearing lower-cut necklines to walking around in her bra, Jess has been less adorkable and more provocative lately.

What’s with the sexy wardrobe makeover?

“I’m really just following the lead of the writers,” says McGuire. “As you know from the storyline, there seems to be more sensuality and sexuality going on, and that will continue as the season develops.”

McGuire still scours vintage stores to dress Jess, only now she keeps an eye out for sexier pieces.

How is Deschanel is handling the increased exposure? “She is an actor, so she’s going to wear what bests suits her character. If it requires [wearing sexier clothes], that’s where she’s at,” McGuire explains. ”There are ways to play with this [new look] that are definitely part of Jess’ character.”

Jess may be exploring some tighter silhouettes, but McGuire says she doesn’t intend to change her look completely. (Translation: We haven’t seen the last of those retro dresses.)

From left: Jennifer Lawrence, Claire Danes, Marion Cotillard, Zooey Deschanel, Jennifer Garner and Naomi Watts.

There were many shades of red at the Golden Globes.

Jennifer Lawrence did her duty as the face of Dior, wearing a coral A-line dress with a cone-cupped bodice. Zooey Deschanel chose a similar silhouette, but her cherry red Oscar de la Renta gown was more sweetheart than siren.

Marion Cotillard’s asymmetrical Dior dress was a brilliant blood orange — one of the few short frocks we saw — while Claire Danes showed off her killer post-baby figure in a fire engine red Atelier Versace gown.

Jennifer Garner and Naomi Watts took the tone even darker. Garner glittered in a strapless burgundy gown by Vivienne Westwood Couture, Watts chose an elegant oxblood dress by designer Zac Posen.
