At today’s CW Network upfront event in New York City, The Vampire Diaries‘ Nina Dobrev was a vision in blue, wearing a cobalt Versace dress with braided detailing and a pair of iridescent leopard print heels from Rupert Sanderson.

Just as her character’s wardrobe has changed dramatically, so too has Dobrev’s real-life style. Over the past year, the actress has become a perennial best dressed lister, wearing looks from both household name designers like Donna Karan, Elie Saab, and Oscar de la Renta, and edgy up-and-comers like Thakoon and Guishem.

To what does she attribute her killer style? EW caught up with the actress to find out — and to ask her whether she agrees with Gwyneth Paltrow’s declaration that this year’s Met Gala “sucked.” READ FULL STORY »

On the April 18 episode of The Vampire Diaries, Elena, Stefan, Bonnie, Damon and the rest of the gang trade jeans and leather jackets for taffeta and tuxes. That’s right, it’s prom season in Mystic Falls!

Whether human, vampire, werewolf, or witch, Vampire Diaries costume designer Leigh Leverett said she kept the first rule of prom fashion in mind when dressing each of the characters for the big night — Make sure no one else shows up wearing the same dress. “[The girls] tried on a bunch of gowns, probably 6 to 10 each. We picked a bunch that we liked, so it was just figuring out who [would wear] what so that they weren’t all in the same silhouettes or colors.” As for the guys, it came down to the ties.

Elena’s appetite isn’t the only thing changing now that she’s a vampire. Her wardrobe is going through a transition too.

“We’re giving her a slightly more sophisticated look,” said costume designer Leigh Leverett, who explained that Elena will be trading in her usual jeans-and-T-shirt ensembles for more dresses and boots on season 4 of the supernatural series.

And since Elena now has the freedom to accessorize, she’ll be dipping into her jewelry box more often.

“She had to wear the Vervain necklace before, so she didn’t get to wear a lot of good fun jewelry,” said Leverett, who added that we’ll be seeing Elena in more chain necklaces this season. “Of course [Nina Dobrev] likes that because she loves jewelry.”
