Movie makeup legend Michael Westmore on 'Star Trek,' this year's Oscar makeup nominees and his gig as a mentor on 'Face Off'

Syfy’s Face Off had a host of talented entertainers appear on the reality competition show to give contestants their two cents on their makeup work – including The Walking Dead producer Gail Anne Hurd, visual effects artist Tom Savini and Lord of the Rings actor Sean Astin. Now another industry great is a regular presence on the show, veteran makeup artist Michael Westmore.

Westmore was a guest judge on Face Off in past seasons, but this year he is the contestants’ mentor, giving them pointers on their in-progress makeups every episode.

Part of a family of celebrated Hollywood makeup artists, Westmore’s credits include Blade Runner, Raging Bull, and multiple Star Trek films and TV shows, starting with the series that gave new life to the franchise, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

For Westmore, one appeal of being a mentor on Face Off is working with his actress daughter, McKenzie, who hosts the show. Read on for EW’s chat with Michael Westmore, who discusses his experience on Face Off, teases his critique on the alien werewolf makeups in tonight’s episode and recalls some highlights of his career. How Adele chose the dress she wore for her Oscars performance -- EXCLUSIVE PHOTO

From beading to crystals and a flurry of sequins, the stars were in full glitter mode at Sunday night’s Oscars, but Adele was one of the few celebrities to give us a double dose of shine.

On the red carpet, the “Skyfall” singer wore a beaded Jenny Packham gown, but she upped the sparkle factor even more when it came time for her performance, changing into a Burberry dress, silver Christian Louboutin ‘Bibi’ platform pumps and diamond earrings from Van Cleef and Arpels.

“My dress weighs 15 kilos [33 pounds]. It’s so heavy,” the nominee — who went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song — told Kristen Chenoweth. “So when you take a breath to do a big note, it’s a bit difficult.”

Why did she choose such a weighty dress?

best-dressed-man-poll

The Oscars attire worn by Hollywood’s leading men may not have had as many elements as those of their female counterparts, but there was still plenty of fashion guy candy.

Daniel Day-Lewis stood out from the pack in a navy blue tux by Italian designer Domenico Vacca.

Eddie Redmayne added a little sartorial edge to his traditional Alexander McQueen tux with a pair of with velvet slippers.

Like his wife, Ben Affleck wore Gucci for the big night, though it was his beard that stole the spotlight.

Both Bradley Cooper and Hugh Jackman sported tuxedos by Tom Ford, Hollywood’s menswear designer du jour.

Oscars Style Memes: Anne Hathaway's 'high beams' are this year's Angelina Jolie's right leg

oscars-anne-hathaway

Step aside, @AngiesRightLeg! Anne Hathaway’s dress and Ben Affleck’s beard were this year’s hot Oscars style memes.

When the structured darts on Hathaway’s Prada gown created the illusion of a wardrobe malfunction, the social media platform went nuts. “Anne Hathaway’s stylist should be fired for not forcing her to wear pasties! HELLO NIPPLES!!!” gossip blogger Perez Hilton tweeted.

Then came the “Breast Supporting Actress” jokes and, inevitably, the @hathawaynipples Twitter handle. “We’d just like to point out that we won Best Supporting Actress without *any* support,” the mystery person behind the account — which quickly gathered over 4,000 followers — joked after Hathaway accepted her Oscar. Quvenzhane Wallis wears Armani Junior (and a new pooch purse) to the Oscars

In addition to making Oscar history, Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis had a major fashion first at last night’s Academy Awards.

The 9-year-old Best Actress nominee was the first to wear a dress from Giorgio Armani’s new Armani Junior collection.

Armani worked with the young actress to design two options, with Wallis choosing a midnight blue gown encrusted with iridescent black, navy and silver jewels. “I liked it because it was sparkly and fluffy,” Wallis told reporters of her gown, which she accessorized with blue ballet flats, drop earrings, a crystal headband, and one of her signature puppy purses.

And though Wallis’ princess gown was super-fancy, it wasn’t too fussy. The actress celebrated her big night — and her later-than-usual bedtime — by hitting the dance floor at the Fox Searchlight after-party.

Dior Fashion Face-Off: Jennifer Lawrence vs. Charlize Theron -- POLL

Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron hit the red carpet in Dior Haute Couture at last night’s Academy Awards, which makes total sense when you consider that both women are on the payroll at the French fashion label — Lawrence is the new face of the brand’s Miss Dior line, while Theron has fronted the brand’s J’Adore fragrance since 2004.

Theron was a vision in a white silk bustier dress, an armful of Harry Winston bracelets, diamond stud earrings. And boy, did she work that short haircut.

Lawrence swept in wearing a pale pink and white silk bustier ball dress, which she accessorized with a jaw dropping Chopard “back necklace,” a Roger Vivier clutch, and Brian Atwood heels.
