'Today' show gang debuts Team USA Olympic opening ceremony uniforms

Anchors Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Carson Daly, and Natalie Morales led the fashion parade when the Team USA’s opening ceremony uniforms were unveiled on the Today show this morning.

Clad head-to-toe in the patriotic ensembles, the Today gang was joined by American curlers Jessica Schultz and Jared Zezel and Ralph Lauren’s David Lauren for the big reveal. “Ralph Lauren was inspired by the classic Americana patchwork quilts and sweaters,” Lauren explained of the outfit’s most eye-catching piece, a knit cardigan emblazoned with stars, strips, Olympic rings, and, of course, the fashion label’s own Polo logo.  Also included: a cream cotton turtleneck sweater, white fleece athletic pants, black leather boots with red laces, a cotton belt, reindeer hat, and mittens with the word “Gold” stitched on one palm.

Lauren was careful to point out that the uniform was made by hand in America. (Last year, Ralph Lauren came under fire when it was revealed that the uniforms worn by American athletes at the 2012 Olympics in London were manufactured in China.) According to a post on the Today show website, “the wool hails from Oregon, was spun in Pennsylvania, then yarned in North Carolina, before being knitted in California by the husband-and-wife team Ball of Cotton.”

Ralph Lauren unveils Team USA uniforms for 2014 Winter Olympics

Ralph Lauren has once again designed the uniforms to be worn by Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics… and this time they’re made in America.

Figure skater Evan Lysacek and mogul skier Hannah Kearney modeled the looks, which the athletes will wear during their downtime in Sochi, Russia and at the closing ceremonies. The ensembles include a wool turtleneck with “Nordic-inspired reindeer and snowflake motifs,” a navy wool pea coat with a red banner stripe and patriotic patches — and Lauren’s trademark polo logo, natch — slim-fit fleece pants, and black leather boots with red laces.

The brand will also give non-Olympians the chance to show their patriotism with its games-inspired Village Wear Collection.  READ FULL STORY
