Nina Dobrev: 'I know what I want, and I know what I like'

At today’s CW Network upfront event in New York City, The Vampire Diaries‘ Nina Dobrev was a vision in blue, wearing a cobalt Versace dress with braided detailing and a pair of iridescent leopard print heels from Rupert Sanderson.

Just as her character’s wardrobe has changed dramatically, so too has Dobrev’s real-life style. Over the past year, the actress has become a perennial best dressed lister, wearing looks from both household name designers like Donna Karan, Elie Saab, and Oscar de la Renta, and edgy up-and-comers like Thakoon and Guishem.

To what does she attribute her killer style? EW caught up with the actress to find out — and to ask her whether she agrees with Gwyneth Paltrow’s declaration that this year’s Met Gala “sucked.” READ FULL STORY

Nina Dobrev's stylist explains the 'Vampire Diaries' star's sexy-chic Met Gala look

Inspired by the Costume Institute’s Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibit, this year’s Met Gala was something like a celebrity Project Runway challenge, leaving more than a few stars scrambling — and failing — to dress the part.

Amid the sea of spikes, heavy eye makeup, and black nail polish, Nina Dobrev stood out in a look that was sexy, chic, and just the right amount of punk. How did she do it? Stylist Ilaria Urbinati, who has worked with the Vampire Diaries star since the 2011 Emmys, gave EW all the details.

Although Urbinati says she “grew up listening to punk,” the initial inspiration for Dobrev’s ensemble came from a designer who’s best known for creating ultra-feminine wedding dresses.

Fashion Face-Off: Kim Kardashian vs. Robin Williams' Mrs. Doubtfire

Yesterday, the fashion press did their best to describe the gloved Ricardo Tisci for Givenchy gown that Kim Kardashian wore to the Met Gala.

“Unforgiving-as-wallpaper,” balked the New York Times. “Your beloved Aunt Sylvia’s finished basement in Van Nuys circa 1986?” TMZ offered. “Our punk moment with a romantic beautiful flower-printed dress,” Tisci himself retorted. “People can say what they want. To me, pregnancy is the most beautiful thing in the world, and when you celebrate something, you give people flowers.”

And just as the fashion backlash seemed to be dying down, Robin Williams tweeted the ultimate sartorial zinger. READ FULL STORY

Met Gala: A dude has some questions

I know what the Met is. I know what a Gala is. I understand, in broad strokes, the basic concepts of high fashion. I know how to spell couture, I think. [Googles.] Yes, I definitely know how to spell couture. But I know almost nothing about the Met Gala. Twitter told me that, this year, there was some kind of “Punk” theme, and apparently said “Punk” theme produced hilarious fashion disasters. The bigwigs here at EW.com asked me to provide an outsider perspective on the evening’s dress wear. Forthwith, certain questions from the male demographic while perusing our fashion gallery.

1. Jennifer Lawrence is wearing a veil. When I went to high school, veils were more “goth.” How old is Jennifer Lawrence, and does she even know the difference between “goth” and “punk”? READ FULL STORY
