Peggy's 'Mad Men' pantsuit: The inside story

Is Peggy Olson the new Don Draper?

In Sunday night’s Mad Men finale, Peggy found herself in Don Draper’s office, following his leave of absence. Perhaps even truer to Don Draper style, Peggy ended an affair while shifting focus back to work, so it’s safe to wonder if the copywriter has learned more than a thing or two from her former mentor.

And while she may have found herself in the creative director’s shoes, it’s Peggy’s pantsuit that has viewers talking. We went to the AMC show’s costume designer Janie Bryant to get the scoop.

“When we see her in the office, it really is that moment of ‘I am empowered. I will survive.’ I wanted to see Peggy in pants to illustrate that she had come so far. It was such strong expression of empowerment,” Bryant tells EW.com.

While other female characters like Joyce (Zosia Mamet) and Megan (Jessica Pare) have been spotted on the series in pants, it marks a certain coming-of-age for Peggy, who’s better known for her “forever schoolgirl” look. “Peggy really is a modern woman and for her to make that choice to wear pants shows how far women have come. Most women wouldn’t wear pants to the office, and that’s why I wanted Peggy to be in pants for that scene.”

'Mad Men': How Sally Draper dresses in her 'different worlds'

It’s impossible to talk about Mad Men without talking about the clothes. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes garish, sometimes voyeuristic, and sometimes teasingly symbolic, nothing is chosen just for aesthetics. On Mad Men, the costumes are storytelling devices that help create a richer and more textual experience for the viewer.

Janie Bryant, the Emmy award-winning (for Deadwood) designer behind the costumes of Mad Men, spoke to EW last month about her theory behind melding the costumes with the development of individual characters, including Sally Draper (Kiernan Shipka). Though cryptic at the time, in light of Sunday’s episode, Bryant’s comments about Sally were suddenly brought into focus. [SPOILER ALERT: We’ll be briefly discussing plot points from the June 9th episode “Favors”]

'Mad Men' costume clue or conspiracy theory: Is Megan Draper Sharon Tate?

In a show that’s packed with symbolism, could a T-shirt serve as a death omen?

After Sunday night’s episode of Mad Men, an observant viewer tweeted at costume designer Janie Bryant to ask about the similarity between a T-shirt seen on Megan Draper and one worn by model Sharon Tate in a 1967 photo shoot for Esquire magazine, and Bryant’s less-than-crystal-clear response has sparked talk of a costume-driven conspiracy theory on Reddit.

In August 1969, Tate — then eight-and-a-half-months pregnant and married to director Roman Polanski — was murdered by followers of Charles Manson during a home invasion at the couple’s home in Los Angeles. Does the red star on Megan Draper’s shirt mean that the character is headed towards a similar fate?  READ FULL STORY
