The theme of this year’s Met Gala, celebrating the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s latest exhibit Punk: Chaos to Couture, was, fittingly, punk rock. But sadly, not even Madonna dared to just wear a Clash t-shirt and jeans to what’s become the “Oscars of the East Coast.” From watching Vogue.com’s live stream of the Met Ball’s red carpet, we learned the celebs and their designer dates had a wide range of punk knowledge — from barely any (Hailee Steinfeld: “Avril Lavigne’s not punk?!”) — to Gwyneth Paltrow claiming that Spence girls wore safety pins in their ears.

Below, some of our favorite moments from the red carpet, hosted by Hillary Rhoda and Vogue’s Billy Norwich:

The Grammy Dress Code: Did the stars play it too safe on the red carpet? -- POLL

grammys-fashion

Image Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage; Jeff Vespa/WireImage; Kevin Mazur/WireImage

In the days leading up to the Grammy Awards, the CBS standards and practices department issued a “wardrobe advisory” warning performers, presenters and audience members against over-exposing themselves.

Despite the ban on “breasts, buttocks and genitals,” a few stars still decided to push the envelope, but overall, the red carpet fashion at this year’s Grammys was underwhelming.

Where was this year’s designer egg? Or Versace nun’s habit?

Florence Welch’s reptilian Givenchy dress was a standout, but not in a “What the hell is she wearing?!” kind of way. And I’m not sure who that guy in the astronaut suit was, but unless his get-up was designed by Tom Ford, it doesn’t count.

Fashion Face-Off: Katy Perry vs. Jenna Elfman -- POLL

Both Jenna Elfman and Katy Perry wore the black-and-orange woven coat with a shearling collar from Rodarte’s Fall 2012 collection to events in Washington, D.C. recently.

On Monday, Perry bundled up to hear the President give his Inaugural Address at the U.S. Capitol.

Last week, Jenna Elfman wore the coat to the White House, where her new TV show, 1600 Penn, was screened for the Commander-in-Chief.

Wonder if Obama noticed the fashion repeat? If he did, he was probably quite diplomatic about it. Which star looks best in stripes? Cast your vote in the poll below.
