Oscars 2014: The makeup of 'Dallas Buyers Club' and creating a realistic portrait of AIDS

dallas-buyers-club-05

When you think about the look of Dallas Buyers Club, makeup probably isn’t top of mind. Everyone knows about Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto’s extreme physical transformations and Jean-Marc Vallée’s preference for natural light and handheld realism, but to the untrained eye, beyond the transgender beauty makeup on Leto’s Rayon, it might be hard to see on the surface why the film is one of the three Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar nominees.

All Matthew McConaughey had to do was gain and lose that weight, right? Wrong.

“People don’t realize how much makeup is actually in the movie, but that’s the ultimate compliment. That’s exactly what I was trying to do,” makeup lead Robin Mathews told EW.

'Oz The Great and Powerful': How the magic was made -VIDEO

OZ-CLIP

James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz are the famous faces of the new Oz prequel, but a behind-the-scenes video shines the spotlight on the crew members who played a key part in making the movie’s magic happen.

In this clip, Oscar-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland) explains how he helped create the whimsical world of Oz, while costume designer Gary Jones describes the process of outfitting the cast and the “joy of working in a land of sheer fantasy.” Special makeup effects artist Howard Berger and makeup department head Vivian Baker also chime in on creating the “big, green, scary witch,” and designing the look of hundreds of background characters.

“Viewers will experience a fantastical world and amazing story,” Franco promises.

Watch the video below to see how the production, wardrobe, and makeup teams used the tricks of their trades to bring the story to the big screen. READ FULL STORY

'Girls' creator Lena Dunham wears Shoshanna-inspired nail polish on this week's cover of EW

1245-COVER-EW.jpg

Lena Dunham may play the role of Hannah on Girls, but on the day of her Entertainment Weekly cover shoot, she was feeling a little Shoshanna.

“Lena [chose] the Shoshanna shade because she liked the contrast of the violet to the edgy makeup,” says manicurist Deborah Lippmann, who used the pale purple color — inspired by Zosia Mamet’s character — from her Girls polish line to paint Dunham’s nails.

Turns out, Dunham actually had a hand in creating the collection.

“When they were having the premiere for the first show of the first season, I donated a polish called ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ to the gift bag. A few days later, I got an email from Lena with a picture of one of her hand with the color on her nails [with the message] ‘Don’t you think it would be kind of cool if Hannah had her own really hip green?'” explains Lippmann, who has created nail polish inspired by Snow White and the Huntsman and True Blood, and recently released a lipstick shade named after Carly Rae Jepsen’s 2012 summer anthem, “Call Me Maybe.” “That’s how it all started.”

The shades in the 4-polish set are inspired by the distinct personalities of the show’s central characters.

“[Lena] gave me some buzz words for the way she thought about each of the girls,” Lippmann says of Dunham’s creative contribution. “Then she stepped away and let me do my thing.”
