'Face Off' exit Q&A: 'I'm not disappointed'

Last night on Face Off, contestants were tasked with making creatures that could do the sand dance don’t you know (oh whey oh) and have a graveyard smash. Well, there actually wasn’t much dancing like an Egyptian or monster mashing, but there were some pretty foreboding mummies – this week’s challenge was to create an Evil Dead-inspired, mummified Egyptian god.

Though judge Glenn Hetrick offered some sincere praise for all of the makeups, ultimately David Greathouse (better known by the nickname “House”) was eliminated for his take on the Egyptian god Thoth. The judges criticized the makeup for its gold color, for the execution of transferring Thoth’s tablet inscriptions to his chest and for a mask that looked more Venetian than Egyptian.

EW talked with House about what went wrong with his makeup, his favorite work on the show, and what happens on those long van rides during the Face Off field trips. READ FULL STORY »

Hairstylist Mark Townsend on how Jennifer Lawrence's hair has changed (but she hasn't)

Oscar Sunday was a big day for Jennifer Lawrence, but it was also a big day for her hairstylist, Mark Townsend. The hair guru has been styling the actress’ locks for years — even before she worked the awards season red carpet for 2010′s Winter’s Bone – and just as Lawrence has evolved from a small screen supporting actress into an Oscar-winning leading lady, Townsend says her hair has come a long way in a short time.

At an event promoting Dove hair care products (Townsend works for the brand) in New York City last week, EW chatted up the celebrity stylist to get the inside scoop on how Lawrence has stayed true to her, ahem, roots, his own Hollywood big break, and how he manages the “hair politics” that come with having a bevy of star clients.

“The best thing with Jennifer is she’s kind of grown into herself,” Townsend said. “She’s got so much hair, it’s easy for me to go hyper-glam. But she [personally] favors a natural, softer look. She really shined through this whole awards season because she was comfortable and doing what she wants to do. She is such a dream collaborator.”

And, apparently, a messy eater.  READ FULL STORY »

'The Americans' costume designer on how to incorporate crazy '80s fashion trends

The-Americans_510x317.jpg

Although FX’s spy drama The Americans is set in 1981, you probably noticed the show’s lack of big hair and neon. That’s partly because costume designer Jenny Gering (pictured here) looked to 1979 for inspiration — and because of where the show is set.

“The show is not set in New York City. It’s set in Washington, D.C. and suburban Virginia. So this is definitely not the cutting edge place to find what would be the latest look.” But with the series inevitably delving further into the decade — season two is already in the works — EW asked the costume designer how she plans to tackle some of those popular (and awesomely over-the-top) trends from the ’80s they finally make their way to the suburbs. See what she had to say about shoulder pads, Miami Vice, and more below.

'Face Off' exit interviews: "I was second-guessing myself a lot"

Meagan-Hester

Alien werewolves, two-headed giants and demons from a frozen-over hell have sprouted from the paintbrushes and sculpting tools of this season’s Face Off contestants. In last night’s episode, contestants on the Syfy effects makeup show were tasked with creating a newly discovered species using luminescent paint.

Two contestants were sent home in last night’s episode in the show’s first ever double elimination. Meagan Hester’s attempt to incorporate a venus flytrap into her creature failed to wow the judges, and Eric Zapata’s cave-dwelling amphibian/reptile also was the target of tough criticism.

EW caught up with both Hester and Zapata to talk about what went wrong with their final makeups, their favorite off-camera moments on the show and what professional effects makeup gigs have been keeping them busy since their elimination. READ FULL STORY »

Movie makeup legend Michael Westmore on 'Star Trek,' this year's Oscar makeup nominees and his gig as a mentor on 'Face Off'

Syfy’s Face Off had a host of talented entertainers appear on the reality competition show to give contestants their two cents on their makeup work – including The Walking Dead producer Gail Anne Hurd, visual effects artist Tom Savini and Lord of the Rings actor Sean Astin. Now another industry great is a regular presence on the show, veteran makeup artist Michael Westmore.

Westmore was a guest judge on Face Off in past seasons, but this year he is the contestants’ mentor, giving them pointers on their in-progress makeups every episode.

Part of a family of celebrated Hollywood makeup artists, Westmore’s credits include Blade Runner, Raging Bull, and multiple Star Trek films and TV shows, starting with the series that gave new life to the franchise, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

For Westmore, one appeal of being a mentor on Face Off is working with his actress daughter, McKenzie, who hosts the show. Read on for EW’s chat with Michael Westmore, who discusses his experience on Face Off, teases his critique on the alien werewolf makeups in tonight’s episode and recalls some highlights of his career. One week after Rihanna presented her first fashion show for River Island the pop princess has moved onto her next stylish venture: a makeup collection for MAC.

The collaboration — which the Rihanna called “a no-brainer” — will include multiple collections of color cosmetics due in stores this year, according to WWD. The first item to hit shelves: RiRi Woo, a lipstick inspired by the Grammy singer’s favorite MAC red, Ruby Woo, that will release in time with Rihanna’s Diamonds Tour concerts on May 4 and 5 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. MAC will open a pop-up shop on the first night to showcase the line. READ FULL STORY »
