Met Gala: A dude has some questions

Met-Gala-Miley-Cyrus

I know what the Met is. I know what a Gala is. I understand, in broad strokes, the basic concepts of high fashion. I know how to spell couture, I think. [Googles.] Yes, I definitely know how to spell couture. But I know almost nothing about the Met Gala. Twitter told me that, this year, there was some kind of “Punk” theme, and apparently said “Punk” theme produced hilarious fashion disasters. The bigwigs here at EW.com asked me to provide an outsider perspective on the evening’s dress wear. Forthwith, certain questions from the male demographic while perusing our fashion gallery.

1. Jennifer Lawrence is wearing a veil. When I went to high school, veils were more “goth.” How old is Jennifer Lawrence, and does she even know the difference between “goth” and “punk”? READ FULL STORY »

The 2013 Met Gala: Who's taking whom (and what will everyone wear?)

Gwyneth-Paltrow-Valentino.jpg

At Monday night’s Met Gala, guests are expected to wear ensembles that evoke the theme of this year’s Met Costume Institute exhibition – PUNK: Chaos to Couture.

Earlier this week, Dukes of Melrose star Cameron Silver told the New York Times that “no one has a clue” what to wear to the punk-themed ball. “We keep running into the same problem, which is that rich women don’t want to look punk, or grunge,” Silver, who owns the Decades vintage and consignment boutique in L.A. said of the difficulty he’s had outfitting his wealthy clientele for the big night. “Not that many women want to look like Nancy Spungen.”

For celebrities, finding the perfect punk-inspired ensemble starts with a designer fairy godmother — or godfather, as the case may be.

Will someone wear the Versace safety-pin dress made famous by Elizabeth Hurley and, later, Lady Gaga? Will Gwyneth Paltrow send her team out to find a razor so she can shave her… head and show up with a mohawk? Will Elizabeth Banks come as Effie Trinket? Will Kanye West bring Kim Kardashian? (That last question has nothing to do with fashion, but it had to be asked.)

A list of the designers and their celebrity dates posted yesterday by The Hollywood Reporter may offer some clues. Click on to see who will be escorting — and therefore probably dressing — stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Nicki Minaj, Psy, Jennifer Lopez, and more stars to the Oscars of Fashion.  READ FULL STORY »

Beyonce debuts new single, wears a skimpy bikini in H&M commercial

Beyoncé is heating things up in a new television commercial for her H&M summer campaign.

The spot is the singer’s latest ad-slash-music-video. After debut of “Mirrors” via a Pepsi commercial earlier this month, the new H&M ad — titled “Beyoncé as Mrs. Carter for H&M” — features a blond Beyoncé singing the new track ”Standing on the Sun.” Among the style highlights: B gets sandy on the beach in a skimpy two-piece suit, rolls around in the surf wearing a skin-tight body con dress, and goes tribal in an embellished LBD.

“I really loved the concept we collaborated on to explore the different emotions of women represented by the four elements – fire, water, earth and wind,” Beyoncé said in a statement released by H&M. “It was a beautiful shoot on a tropical island. It felt more like making a video than a commercial.”

Last night, Beyoncé kicked off her Mrs. Carter Show world tour in Belgrade, Serbia, debuting the designer wardrobe she’ll wear as she sings her way across Europe and the United States this summer.

During her kick-off show, the woman who brought us “Freakum Dress” paraded around the stage in an array of costumes — including bedazzled bodysuits, hot pants, and thigh-high boots – by designers like Emilio Pucci, Ralph & Russo (pictured above), DSquared2, and Stuart Weitzman.

Oh yeah, and a gold sequined bodysuit patterned with trompe l’oeil breasts that makes Madonna’s Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra look demure.
