Costumes from the original 'Sound of Music' to go up for auction

Talk about a revival. Not only is Carrie Underwood taking over the role of Maria in NBC’s The Sound of Music Live! (Dec. 5 at 8 pm), but costumes from the 1965 film — based on the original Broadway musical by Lindsay and Crouse — are hitting the auction block.

On December 21, Profiles in History will sell fourteen costumes from the Oscar-winning movie musical to the highest bidder, a lot that’s estimated to be worth $150,000-$250,000. An auction of Sound of Music costumes held last summer brought in over $1.5 million.

Among the items up for grabs this time are garments worn by the Von Trapp children and the jacket and pants worn by Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) when the family performs the songs “Edelweiss” and “So Long, Farewell,” at the concert that sets off the film’s final sequence.

The lot was pulled from the Western Costume Company’s 6000-piece “Star Collection,” marking the first time costumes from archive have been sold in over 25 years. A release about the upcoming Sound of Music auction hints that other costumes from the archive — which includes Vivian Leigh’s “Shantytown” dress from Gone with the Wind and Rudolph Valentino’s robes from the 1926 silent film Son of the Sheik — will soon hit the block.

'Hunger Games' costumes to hit the auction block

Later this month, net-a-porter.com will launch Capitol Couture, a collection of clothing designed by Catching Fire costume designer Trish Summerville, but if you’re a  super-fan, you’ll want to place your bid on actual costumes worn by the actors in the first installment of the Hunger Games movie franchise.

Among the over 200 wardrobe pieces from the first film —  designed by Judianna Makovsky — are Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) Swarovski crystal embellished Girl on Fire gown (starting bid $10,000), custom-made distressed brown leather jacket (starting bid $5,000), and light blue reaping dress (starting bid $2,000). Other notable items include Effie Trinket’s (Elizabeth Banks) fuchsia reaping suit (starting bid $2,000), Peeta’s (Josh Hutcherson) training uniform ($600), The Tributes’ unisex ensembles (starting bid $200-$1,000), and the black and white uniforms seen on the Peacekeepers (starting bid $600). Costumes worn by Liam Hemsworth (Gale) and Lenny Kravitz (Cinna) will also hit the block.

Hosted by Blacksparrow Auction, the sale will take place on Saturday, November 16th at 11 am/PST in Sun Valley, CA. (Interested parties can also bid by phone or online.) A portion of the profits will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Among the items from The Oprah Winfrey Collection that will go on the block: a collection of English George Smith upholstered furniture, an 18th century Louis XVI chest with an estimated value of between $30,000 and $50,000, and a set of embroidered yellow silk Louis XV armchairs worth between $20,000 and $40,000. Kaminski Auctions will host the event on November 2 at the Santa Barbara Polo Club and Racquet Club in Carpinteria, California. Star audition tapes off the block, memorabilia from 'Star Trek,' 'Superman' and more still to be auctioned

More than 50 VHS tapes of auditions by the likes of Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Julianne Moore will no longer be up for bids during the Julien’s Auctions “Hollywood Legends” sale.

The auction house pulled the tapes and issued a statement after complaints were received from actors’ union SAG-AFTRA — which declared that “auditions are not public performances” — and the Casting Society of America.

Even without the tapes, Julien’s still has hundreds of lots that include costumes, props and other Hollywood memorabilia, and the auction will be held as planned from April 5-6.

Michael Jackson auction raises over $5 million; Lady Gaga among buyers

The sale of costumes and other memorabilia spanning the career of Michael Jackson netted over $5 million this weekend at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles.

Among the collectors who got their hands on a piece of the King of Pop’s music history was none other than Lady Gaga, who placed bids on items including a Jackson-worn glitter glove. “The 55 pieces I collected today will be archived & expertly cared for in the spirit & love of Michael Jackson, his bravery, & fans worldwide,” the singer Tweeted. And while winning bidders’ details are kept confidential, if the final price for the hot ticket items are any indication, Mama Monster spent a pretty penny.

Among the coveted costume pieces — from the collection of Jackson’s long time fashion designers, Tompkins & Bush — was a “Beat It” jacket worn by Jackson on his 1992 Dangerous World Tour, which sold for over $200,000.

A portion of the proceeds of the auction will benefit two charities, Guide Dogs of America and Nathan Adelson Hospice of Las Vegas.
