Don't understand Brad Pitt's Chanel No. 5 ads? Neither does the guy who directed them

“It’s not a journey. Every journey ends, but we go on. The world turns and we turn with it. Plans disappear, dreams take over, but wherever I go, there you are: my luck; my fate; my fortune. Chanel No.5, inevitable.”

Say what now?

In his debut as the first male face of the iconic Chanel No. 5 perfume, Brad Pitt recited a dramatic monologue that had us all scratching our heads and harkening back to that bizarre 1985 spot for Calvin Klein’s Obsession. According to Saturday Night Live‘s Taran Killam, who starred in a series of spoofs based on the No. 5 commercials, even the director of the ads had no idea what Pitt was talking about.

Hollywood for Sale: The 'Anna Karenina' movie set sale

To re-create the rich look of 19th century Russia in Anna Karenina, production designer Sarah Greenwood and set designer Katie Spencer — the Oscar-nominated duo behind Pride and Prejudice and Atonement – scoured flea markets, antique shops, and private collections for authentic furniture, props and art. And what they couldn’t find, they made.

Today at 11am EST, One Kings Lane kicks off a 72-hour flash sale of pieces straight from the set of Anna Karenina and additional items inspired by the film (in theaters now). Victorian furniture. books and artwork, curtains and light fixtures, and accessories like opera glasses and gloves are all part of the vast selection of goods, with prices ranging from $15-$2,000.

Previous One Kings Lane movie set sales have been pegged to Jane Eyre and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, but reps for the site tell us that, with more than 700 items up for grabs, the Karenina event is their biggest to date.

Kristen Stewart hates heels, the $50 million set(s) of 'Anna Karenina' and more

Kristen Stewart “can’t stand” actresses who are too concerned with ‘looking pretty in your heels’ and will sport her sneakers on the red carpet if she darned well pleases. “I just so wholeheartedly disagree with people who don’t like what I wear,” she said. [Daily Mail UK]

Keira Knightley delivers her 'Anna Karenina' dress to the Hollywood Costume exhibit

Keira Knightley is no stranger to costume drama.

On Tuesday, the Anna Karenina star joined costume designer Jacqueline Durran to donate a stunning bordeaux-colored gown from the upcoming movie (in theaters next month) to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, where it will be displayed as part of the Hollywood Costume exhibition.

The stunning emerald dress Knightley wore in 2007’s Atonement is also included in the exhibit, which will feature 100 of the best examples of wardrobe design from a decade of Hollywood filmmaking.

“She’s an absolute dream to dress,” Durran — who designed both of the Knightley-worn dresses included in the V&A exhibition and also wardrobed the actress for 2005’s Pride and Prejudice — has said. “Everything hangs perfectly from her shoulders.” Fans of Durran’s period pieces can shop Banana Republic’s special Anna Karenina-inspired holiday capsule collection, which was curated by the Oscar-winning costume designer, when it arrives on October 30.

Opening October 20, the V&A Museum’s Hollywood Costume exhibition also includes iconic looks like Marilyn Monroe’s white halter dress from The Seven Year Itch, Johnny Deep’s swashbuckling get-up from Pirates of the Caribbean, and, naturally, the ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.
