'Face Off' exit Q&A: 'I was surprised I lasted as long as I did'

This week’s episode of Face Off presented the Syfy network with the perfect opportunity to promote its upcoming post-apocalyptic series. After Defiance writer-producer Kevin Murphy introduced the aliens that will be featured on the show, contestants were tasked with creating a hybrid of two of the otherworldly species.

Fan favorite Eric Fox knew this challenge would be “right up his alley” when he saw the Mutant, but each creature could only be used twice, and Anthony Kosar and Kris Kobzina staked claims before it was Fox’s turn to choose. After struggling with his concept, Fox delivered a makeup that received praise from all three judges, as well as the guest judge, Defiance producer Michael Nankin. Glenn Hetrick even said Fox “took a big stride forward as an artist” with his work. But there was criticism too: Ve Neill disliked the creature’s hair, and Nankin thought the design was more a patchwork of two species rather than a true hybrid. After all was said and done, Fox was sent home.

EW talked with Fox about his final Face Off challenge, his young daughter’s reaction to seeing her dad on TV, the massive giant he created earlier in the season, and what he’s been working on since filming wrapped. READ FULL STORY »

Jimmy Kimmel creates PSA to address the Lululemon yoga pants shortage -- VIDEO

Yesterday, apparel retailer Lululemon Athletica issued a recall of their popular Luon style yoga pants because the material made to use them was too sheer.

After the company announced it would pull the pants — which account for 17% of its current inventory — from shelves and issue refunds to customers, the company’s stock price fell more than 5%. “We expect this issue will have a significant impact on our financial results,” reads a press release titled “Black Luon Yoga Pant Shortage Expected.”

The effects of the see-through snafu may be serious business for Lululemon, but they’re comic fodder for late night host Jimmy Kimmel, who created a public service announcement on the resulting yoga pants shortage.

Watch Kimmel poke fun at the first world problem in the video below.  READ FULL STORY »

'NCIS: LA': An inside look at the set for the show's spin-off

Tonight on NCIS: LA, viewers will be introduced to the Red Team, a mobile team of investigators who cross paths with Sam (LL Cool J) and Callen (Chris O’Donnell) while looking into a case.

But one of the biggest challenges going into this backdoor pilot was creating a set that could stand the test of time should the spin-off, working title NCIS: Red, get picked up to series, according to executive producer Shane Brennan. “It wasn’t a set we could build as a guest set,” he says. “It had to be totally credible and it had to sell the concept. It couldn’t be anything short of a working set.” READ FULL STORY »

'Game of Thrones': Hiding Kit Harington's ankle, faking sweat stains and more costume drama

From having to hide Kit Harington’s cast to making sure the extras weren’t smuggling cell phones and cigarettes in their pants, Emmy-winning designer Michele Clapton filled EW in on all the costume drama that happened during filming for season 3 of Game of Thrones.

EW: What were the biggest challenges for the wardrobe department on season 3?
MICHELE CLAPTON: Kit Harington was in a cast for a lot of the time. They asked me to create a boot to cover it, but it was impossible because it was a great big, white foot! We couldn’t shoot it at first because there was no way we could cover [his cast]. Later on he had a medical boot that he could take off, but he still couldn’t walk. We cut the back out of his [costume] boot so that he could put it on without having to actually step into it and just bound it to his leg. He managed really well, considering the amount of pain he was in. Thankfully he’s much better now, but that was a tricky one.  READ FULL STORY »

'Vikings' costume designer on dressing pillagers and plunderers for the History Channel series

In the nine-part mini-series Vikings, Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his band of horn-helmeted brutes pillage and plunder wearing togs by Emmy award-winning costume designer Joan Bergin (The Tudors and Camelot).

“I started researching mainly at Scandinavian museums, which are exemplary in the way they show all the great findings, and although a lot of the fabrics have rotted, there are a lot of artifacts and jewelry,” said Bergin, who also took a little creative license on the costumes. “I built up a very general picture of how they looked, but I discovered that perhaps there wasn’t enough there to sustain visual interest for nine episodes. I had to take a leap of faith. Overall, I think you just try to be as true and as original as you can and take some liberties to make it interesting.”

With a reported budget of $40 million, Vikings, is the biggest production ever commissioned by the History channel, which meant Bergin had the resources she needed to create luxe period costumes with intricate details.
