Melissa McCarthy's 'Elle' magazine cover sparks fashion backlash

Melissa-McCarthy-Elle.jpg

Is Elle magazine guilty of orchestrating a fashion cover-up?

The monthly fashion magazine is drawing criticism for its portrayal of November cover girl Melissa McCarthy, who fronts the annual “Women in Hollywood” issue. While alternate covers of the issue feature Reese Witherspoon in a bodycon Versace cut-out dress and Shailene Woodley in a bathing suit and sneakers, McCarthy is bundled up in a figure-concealing coat, a look that some say is pure sizeism.

“This year, Elle‘s token plus-size cover girl is McCarthy, who was photographed in a Marina Rinaldi coat so huge that she could hide her Mike and Molly co-star Billy Gardel underneath,” wrote June Thomas of Slate. “McCarthy’s hair covers a quarter of her gorgeous face, and with her hands stuffed deep into her coat pockets, the only visible flesh is a tiny triangle between the coat’s lapels and the briefest glimpse of calf. Perhaps photographer Thomas Whiteside only knows how to photograph the usual stick insect models, because he clearly has no clue how to highlight McCarthy’s curves.”

This isn’t the first time the 43-year-old actress’s appearance has sparked controversy.  READ FULL STORY

Oprah Winfrey to auction off antiques, art, and more items from her home

Want to own a few of Oprah’s favorite things? Next month, Winfrey will auction off furniture, antiques, and fine art from her 23,000-square-foot Montecito mansion — which is currently undergoing a major interior redesign — and her homes in Chicago, Maui, and Indiana.

Among the items from The Oprah Winfrey Collection that will go on the block: a collection of English George Smith upholstered furniture, an 18th century Louis XVI chest with an estimated value of between $30,000 and $50,000, and a set of embroidered yellow silk Louis XV armchairs worth between $20,000 and $40,000. Kaminski Auctions will host the event on November 2 at the Santa Barbara Polo Club and Racquet Club in Carpinteria, California. Though free general admission is available, a $100 VIP package guarantees you a reserved seat, a ticket to preview the items, and a catalog containing photos of the lots.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation College Fund, which is dedicated to helping female graduates from the media mogul’s South African school attend college.

This isn’t the first time Winfrey has put her hand-me-downs up for sale.  READ FULL STORY

The Mindy Project's Salvador Perez named president of the Costume Designers Guild

The Mindy Project costume designer Salvador Perez- has been elected President of the Costume Designers Guild, it was announced yesterday.

Perez — also known for his work on Castle, Veronica Mars, and the 2012’s Pitch Perfect —  has been a Guild member for 18 years, previously serving as the organization’s vice president and head of the member directory. He currently oversees the CDG’s website. Perez succeeds Mary Rose (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, T.J. Hooker) who was elected president in 2007.

“The way women wear and buy designer clothes now is so different from women in the ’50s and ’60s,” Perez, who designed Lindsay Lohan’s wardrobe for the Lifetime movie Liz & Dick, told EW last year. “Elizabeth Taylor didn’t go to Vera Wang to have her wedding dress [for her marriage to Richard Burton] made, she went to her [favorite] film costume designer.”   READ FULL STORY

Kate Middleton makes her first post-baby red carpet appearance -- POLL

Duchess Catherine made her much-anticipated return to the red carpet in London Thursday evening.

The Duchess glittered, but not everyone thought she’d struck gold with her ensemble.

“All I see here is a bunch of sequins, a droopy empire waist and an odd back panel,” wrote Catherine Kallon of the blog Red Carpet Fashion Awards. “I know the world is going gaga for this look right now, but I find myself more drawn to the tuxedo-clad William — and this is coming from the human-magpie.”

What do you think of Catherine’s dress? Cast your vote in the poll below.
