Small woman, big problem
In June, Star Trek Into Darkness star Zoe Saldana appeared on the cover of Allure‘s June issue next to a headline that read: “Zoe Saldana: 115 pounds of grit and heartache.” The cover line caused a negative reaction among readers, with many questioning the motives behind the decision to reveal the diminutive actress’ weight, and shaming the magazine for perpetuating body image issues among women. For her part, Saldana — who was naked in the photos that ran with the story — insisted that it didn’t bother her that her weight was the topic of conversation. “I think it would have been wrong if they were lying about my weight,” the actress said. “This is how much I weigh. It’s something I can’t control. It’s who I am. I’ve always been of a very thin frame. I was a ballet dancer. So they wanted to do that. I don’t think it was to make an issue of my weight. I think it was to talk about that for a lightweight person I seem to be really strong minded.”
