Playing Hard to Get
The Rubin Singer gown Olivia wore to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is “not like anything that she’s ever worn before,” says Paolo. “She’s not sure if Fitz is responsible for her mother’s death, and she’s having a horrible time with her crew. Things aren’t working well for her, so I wanted something with hard edges. It still has that essence of the Olivia Pope palette, but it’s structured and architectural.” The designer called in racks of designer gowns from New York before finally spotting the perfect dress on a mannequin at Neiman Marcus. “It’s sexy and its feminine, but there’s no sweetness to it. That’s what we wanted in that moment, because this is the tough Olivia.”
