She’s not your candy girl anymore.
Katy Perry has hung up her cupcake bra, and in a behind-the-scenes video from her EW cover shoot, the pop star explains how the goth and grunge-tinged movies and music of the 1990s influenced the latest phase in her style evolution.
“It’s kind of a medley, but I think it’s really based around the ’90s, which I’m living for the first time,” the pop star explains. “I wasn’t really getting to experience the ’90s when they were going on the first time because I came from a very sheltered household that didn’t have a whole lot of pop culture influence.”
Just like the stage costumes and red carpet looks — devised with longtime stylist Johnny Wujek — we’ll see her wearing to hype the launch of her new album, Prism, Perry says the black kilt and bustier she chose for her EW shoot was created by taking fashion cues from movies like Clueless and Empire Records and music icons like the Spice Girls and Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson, “and putting them all into a melting pot.”
