The New York Times recently profiled Diana Schmidtke, a celebrity groomer who specializes in getting male stars ready for the red carpet.
Ms. Schmidtke has coiffed hair, plucked eyebrows, and applied makeup — just a little concealer! — for the likes of George Clooney, Seth MacFarlane, and Mad Men star Jon Hamm, for whom, she told the Times, “it’s always about making him not look too Don Draper.”
Despite having Schmidtke at his disposal for Sunday night’s Emmys, Hamm’s hiatus beard made him appear scruffier than usual. Another actor who looked artfully disheveled thanks to a groomer? Game of Thrones star Kit Harington, who told EW why he needed a professional primper to help him get ready.
“I’m not high maintenance. I did not take that long to get ready today but I did have a groomer, which was nice,” Harington confessed. “I don’t always get one but they splurged today.” (I’m assuming that “they” means HBO.)
What exactly does a groomer do for Harington?
“They touch up the beard. They make sure you don’t look like you’ve just fallen out of bed, which I usually do,” he explained. “You know what they do, really good groomers? They calm you down. They give you a little massage and make sure you’re feeling calm.”
Harington may have felt relaxed on the red carpet, but the actor was still worried that everyone was going to see him sweat.
“I came from Belfast, that’s where I am [filming] this season. Belfast is a lovely city full of lovely people, but it is not the nicest of weather. So it is a treat to be here, even though I am boiling my tits off,” the actor said. “But that’s just the three-piece suit [I'm wearing].”
