Forget Fashion Week, couture, and runway shows. The USPS is attempting to make a name for itself by introducing an all-weather, technology-friendly line of clothing.
The line will be called “Rain Heat & Snow,” in honor of the unofficial motto of mail carriers: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” The USPS is collaborating with Cleveland-based company Wahconah Group, Inc. to create clothing that will be on the cutting edge of functional fashion, said Postal Service Corporate Licensing Manager Steven Mills in a release.
Agency spokesman Roy Betts told NPR that the clothes will have wiring that allows people to plug iPods into the clothes and hear music while they’re walking or jogging. The U.S. Postal Service, unlike that other one which is making a successful comeback, lost over $16 billion in 2012, will halt Saturday delivery starting in August and will be forced to make some even tougher cutbacks in the future if things don’t start looking up.
One designer has proposed a re-branding of the Postal Service, harking to the nostalgia of handwritten letters. Yet another has proposed that the USPSP embrace technology better. Yet the solution to the money problems at the Post Office is apparently going to be expensive specialty clothing. The electronic apparel will be available in department stores for men, with plans for a women’s line in the future.
Will the mail carriers be wearing these fancy clothes? According to Betts, it hasn’t been decided. My guess, if they’re selling the outfits at high-end department stores, is that the USPS won’t be shelling out for their employees. But will anyone else?
