Still searching for a New Year’s Eve outfit? PopStyle is here to help! From a black tie affair to a night on the couch, TV costume designers show you how to dress for any occasion.

Whether you’re a star on the rise or a woman in her prime, there’s no better time to break out the sequins and metallics than New Year’s Eve, just ask Nashville costume designer Susie DeSanto.

“Gold is really popular right now, and sparkles are in.” DeSanto told EW. “Honestly, what’s in the stores and what the designers are doing I’m like, ‘Thank you so much!’ There are so many clothes I have to get for Nashville.”

When DeSanto dressed Connie Britton’s character Rayna Jaymes and Hayden Panittere’s Juliette Barnes for a scene at the famed Ryman Theater, she went for the gold with sexy dresses that were also age-appropriate. “Speaking to their characters, I wanted to make sure that there was a generational difference,” DeSanto said. What’s the trick to wearing metallics in your 20’s, 30’s and 40’s?

In your 20’s and 30’s

When DeSanto couldn’t find the perfect dress for Panitteire’s character, she took matters into her own hands. “It was a big moment for Juliette, so I wanted to make sure that she looked sassy and sexy,” explained DeSanto, who paired the custom strapless dress with peep toe platforms from Christian Louboutin. “[The look] is about attitude more than anything else.”

In your 40’s

“I always like to say ‘a level of sophistication’ rather than ‘older,'” said DeSanto, who chose a copper sequined halter dress  from Mandalay ($1,967 at kylebyalenetoo.com) and bronze Michael Kors peep-toe pumps to give Britton’s character the right kind of sex appeal. “There’s a certain level of attention a woman attracts when she wears something provocative. That’s not the kind of attention that a woman of Rayna’s level of sophistication and artistry and fame would want to attract.”

The Lauren Ralph Lauren sequin sheath ($194 at nordstrom.com) captures the spirit of Rayna’s onstage look, though with a less daring neckline and a more wallet-friendly price tag.
